Wines Produced
Tiger Ranch Wines are heavily influenced by my early years of learning about wine during my time in Europe. I guess I learned in reverse to most Australians, being exposed to the European "Classic" wines and the "Noble" grape varieties that are responsible for their character, as well as their evolution over the past millennium or so hand in hand with the Cuisines of the regions for which they have become famous. Often on their own, they need something more - food and the companionship of that cultural relationship. When I returned to Australia a whole new world of wines was emerging "Sunshine in a glass" wines to be enjoyed with or without food (but never far apart). This was never more evident then during my time as Sommeleir on Hayman Island and having so the opportuity to experience and bring together so many of the very best examples of wines from throughout the wine world at one period in time.
I also recognised that as much as you admire a wine style, they simply cannot be produced just anywhere. I would love to produce a great Bordeaux style Cabernet blend, but where I chose to establish my "Wine Home" that is simply not possible with the climatic influences on the ripening of the grapes. Tasmania's climate on the whole is suited to producing the wines in the styles of Burgundy, Alsace and Germany and as such the grapes that ripen and produce in our climate are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the Noble red and white grapes of Burgundy; and Gewürztraminer one of the classic white varieties of Alsace (France) and also Germany (Although in Germany more often as a sweet style).
There are small pockets or Microclimates that defy the general rule, but they do not exist in the North West region of Tasmania. It is the desire of Tiger Ranch to produce wines influenced by the food and wine cultural partnership, but also capable of enjoyment in a range of environments. "Drink wine in moderation - Enjoy it in abundance"
